BANKS - OPERATIONAL IN INDIA

State Bank of India, established on 2nd June, 1806 as Bank of Bengal, then Imperial Bank of India in 1921। Nationalised on 30th April, 1955 with 60% Stake with Reserve Bank of India and renamed STATE BANK OF INDIA. Its Associate Banks are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Indore, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Saurashtra and State Bank of Travancore.

PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS :

Nationalized 14 Banks on 16th July, 1969:
  1. Allahabad Bank, 1865, H.O. Kolkata
  2. Bank of India, 1906, Mumbai
  3. Bank of Baroda, 1908, Mumbai
  4. Bank of Maharashtra, 1935
  5. Canara Bank, 1906, Bangalore (acquired Laxmi Commercial Bank)
  6. Central Bank of India, 1911
  7. Dena Bank, 1938
  8. Indian Bank, 1907
  9. Indian Overseas Bank, 1937, Chennai
  10. Punjab National Bank, 1895 (Lahore was H.O.), Now New Delhi,
  11. (acquired Universal Bank in 1961, Hindustan Commercial Bank in 1988 and
  12. New Bank of India in 1993).
  13. Syndicate Bank, 1925, Manipal
  14. United Bank of India, 1950, Kolkata
  15. UCO Bank, 1943, Kolkata
  16. Union Bank of India, 1920, Mumbai
5 Banks were nationalized again on 15th April, 1980:

  3. Punjab and Sind Bank, 1908
